WAUKEGAN, Ill. -- Outboard Marine Corp. (OMC) signed a long-term agreement to purchase selected outboard engines from Suzuki Motor Corp., and will market the engines under the Johnson and Evinrude brand names.
In a press release (see below) Tuesday, Outboard Marine said it expects to introduce the expanded product line later this year.

WAUKEGAN, Ill., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Outboard Marine Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation of Hamamatsu, Japan, today announced the signing of a long-term agreement for the supply/purchase of marine power products. Under this agreement, OMC will purchase selected outboard engines from Suzuki. OMC will market the products it purchases under the Johnson(R) and Evinrude(R) brand names.
``We are very excited about the benefits this agreement will offer both companies,'' said Hank Bowman, OMC chairman, president and chief executive officer. ``Both companies will be stronger and more competitive in global markets.
``This agreement also will enable OMC to continue to focus its resources on the development of our proprietary FICHT(TM) fuel injection technology and its applications,'' Bowman added.
``This agreement will enable us to better provide consumers, marine dealers, and boat manufacturers with a more complete and competitive line of technologically advanced products,'' according to Bowman.
OMC expects to introduce its expanded product line later this year. According to Bowman, parts and service for these products will be available through OMC's dealer network. OMC currently has approximately 10,000 dealers worldwide.
Additionally, Bowman said that OMC is continuing its effort to pursue strategic alternatives to enhance shareholder value. He also said this independent effort with Salomon Brothers is on schedule with the projected timetable.

Nikkei English NewsSuzuki Motor Corp. will begin supplying outboard motors this fall to Outboard Marine Corp. (OMC) of the U.S. on an OEM basis, company officials said Tuesday. The firm plans to supply a total of about 10,000 two-cycle and four-cycle engines a year. It hopes the contract will improve the production utilization ratio of its outboard motor operations.
OMC, one of the largest marine product maker in the U.S., hopes to expand its line of outboard motors that meet new emission standards in U.S. and Europe.
Suzuki is second in the domestic outboard motor market, with a production capacity of 7,000 motors a month.
