OUTBOARD MARINE CORPORATION
ANNOUNCES WORKFORCE REDUCTION

Press Release
WAUKEGAN, Ill.
March 31, 1998
Outboard Marine Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer, David D. Jones, today announced that the Company would be reducing its workforce by approximately 200 salaried employees, effective immediately. The reduction applies to the Company's operations worldwide.

"OMC has made substantial progress in our efforts to reach profitability for the year," said Jones. "We have launched several strategic initiatives which will drive significant costs out of our operation, long-term. Earlier this year, we also began a reorganization of our company's boat operations -- realigning our brands and organizations, and eliminating approximately 340 jobs. This has helped to improve efficiencies within these facilities and reduce our costs. Today's action will produce similar results throughout our remaining operations."

Outboard Marine Corporation employs 6,500 people in forty facilities, worldwide. OMC is a leading manufacturer and marketer of marine engines, boats, accessories and FICHT(R) fuel injection -- the industry's premier low- emission engine technology.
