 SUBJECT: IMI: SHIPBUILDING ACTIVITY INCREASES IN WESTERN
 AUSTRALIA.
 
 1. THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN (WA) SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY IS
 SET TO CONTINUE ITS STEADY GROWTH OF THE PAST FEW YEARS.
 FIGURES RELEASED BY THE GOVERNMENT LATE LAST YEAR
 INDICATE THAT THE INDUSTRY NOW HAS AN ANNUAL TURNOVER OF
 USDOLS 175 MILLION AND EXPECTATIONS ARE IT WILL MORE
 DOUBLE THAT FIGURE BY THE TURN OF THE CENTURY.  MAJOR
 MARKETS FOR THE WA SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY ARE SOUTH EAST
 ASIA, GULF COUNTRIES AND BRITAIN.
 2. GROWTH HAS BEEN AND IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO BE IN
 THE AREAS OF ALUMINIUM PLEASURE CRAFT; MARINE POLICE
 PATROL BOATS; HIGH-SPEED BOATS FOR OFFSHORE OIL SPILL
 RECOVERY; AIR CUSHION CATAMARANS; AND FERRIES CAPABLE OF
 CARRYING PASSENGERS/CARS/BUSES AND/OR TRUCKS.   REFITTING
 OF A GUIDED-MISSILE GAS-TURBINE POWERED FRIGATE IS ALSO
 UNDERWAY.  IF THIS MAJOR REFIT IS CARRIED OUT TO THE
 SATISFACTION OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY (RAN) THE
 CONTRACTORS ARE HOPEFUL IT WILL LEAD TO ON-GOING
 MAINTENANCE AND MAJOR REFIT CONTRACTS BEING AWARDED TO
 LOCAL COMPANIES, PARTICULARLY IF ADDITIONAL FRIGATES ARE
 BASED IN WA.
 3.  AUSTRALIAN CONTENT OF LOCALLY DESIGNED BOATS IS ABOUT
 60-70 PERCENT, HOWEVER, MOST ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS ARE
 IMPORTED AS ARE THE ENGINES.  THE FOLLOWING COMPANIES ARE
 UNDERSTOOD TO BE NEGOTIATING CONTRACTS FOR THE
 CONSTRUCTION OF A NUMBER OF VESSELS:
