Subject: TCW III Outboard Engine Oil
I was recently advised by an outboard mechanic to always use brand name (meaning Yamaha, Mercury or OMC) TCW 3 oil for my dual outboards. He claims that engines that use "off brands" show more wear and have more problems. I am sick and tired of paying $13-15.00/gallon for brand name oil and am tempted to start using "off brands" for half the price but the mechanic's advice worries me. I am looking for someone that has accurate information to help in this matter.

Max twc111 out board oil is a agreed standard OMC< MERC, YAMHA dont make oil and cannot tell you to burn only there brands of oil unless they supply it free of charge to you by law. the major oil companys make the oil for all engines as long as you use a major brand you will be fine Texico makes the oil for alot of the outboards you can pick it up for about $8.00 per gal. Texico has a web site check it out .

This subject comes up on a regular basis, and while there are always lots of posts from "Ben Told," I've never really heard anything conclusive. For every mechanic that tells you to use major brand oil, there's one that says it doesn't matter.

I suspect that the major brand might have just a few more additives, but that's pure speculation. It may be a situation where the differences only come out in extreme situations. For example, if you're like me, and seldom push your outboard past 2/3 throttle, and service the motor religiously, maybe using Walmarts $7 Tech 2000 TCW-III oil will work just fine. On the other hand, if you're in some application where you spend 99% of the time pushing the motor to its absolute limit of throttle and load, the expensive oil might give you an edge in protection. Again, that's just speculation on my part.

I personally used Mercury Quicksilver TCW-!!! ($17 a gallon!) in my Merc 150 outboard for the first 150+ hours, then switched to cheaper oils, mainly Lubrimatic and sometimes Walmart's TCW-III for the next 100 hours, and I can tell *no* difference whatsoever in plug fouling, running, starting, top speed, etc. It does seem to smoke a bit less when I first start it up.

Again, when you bring this up, you'll hear everything. Keep an open mind.

Max, I'm a sworn believer in the OEM stuff because I have seen the physical evidence of what happens to the insides of engines. I think we've come to the 'agree to disagree' point in this newsgroup so to get complete information on what's been said in the past, head over to http://www.dejanews.com and review the entire thread to help in your decision.

Some engines require special oil. Some oils contain ammonia which when combined with a non-ammonia oil base will form a big glob. Read the labels and compare.

There's an article in this month's BASS & Walleye Magazine that says (basically) all TCW3 is good. I looked on the Web under Amzol and Lubrimatic; they had some details but nothing definitive. You can also read a lot of discussion about the same subject under the recreational boatbuilders webpage. When you consider OMC at a list price of $19.00/gal (discounted to $11.95) but you can buy Texaco Havoline for $5.99/gal, you wish some group would do a definitive test...

Consider this: Lubrimatic makes OMC's oil. They change the color and private label for many different "OEMs"

I am new to the boating world. All I use is lubrimatic. I have used it for about a year now on a 1989 Johnson 120. Should I be using something else??

Please advise.

Max,
You say you have dual outboards - run one with an off-brand TCW 3 oil and the other with brand names and let us know what happens.

Kidding aside, I have heard the same recommendations and have seen plenty of threads on the subject. Yamaha seems to think their new TCW 3 oil is much better than their old stuff. It's hard to tell from our perspective, but if you have twin 225's it seems like cheap insurance to use the so called good stuff.

If you figure 1000 hours of motor life, a rough estimate of motor costs are:

Twin 225 $28,000 The new EFI ones
Fuel Cost $16,000 20 MPH @ 1.8 MPG or 11,111 gallons
Oil $ 2,900 50 to 1 of the good stuff
Total $46,900

Since you went about 20,000 miles, it cost $2.35 per mile for the good stuff, and if you use the off brand stuff at half the price, it is about $2.27 per mile.

If the oil does have any significance on motor life, you could end up paying a lot more per mile than the 7 cents you save by using it.

That's the way I look at it.

Rob

PS: I get my old containers refilled for $2 less than new ones. You can also purchase a 55 gallon drum and save.

Which still doesn't prove that the components and quality control are the same for all products they make.
